Medicare is a federal health insurance program that helps seniors, those with disabilities and kidney failure have access to more affordable healthcare options. Medicare is funded by the government and is available through applications.
If you are a senior 65 years of age or older, you may be eligible to receive Medicare benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you are younger than 65 years of age, you may still be eligible for benefits if you have a qualifying disability or a permanent renal disease.
If you fall under one of the categories mentioned above, you may apply for Medicare benefits. However, you will need to choose which part of Medicare you would like to apply for.
There are 3 parts of Medicare available:
- Medicare Part A, which covers hospital expenses like inpatient care.
- Medicare Part B, which covers medical services such as doctor’s visits and outpatient care.
- Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, which bundles Part A, B and D all in one.
- Medicare Part D, which covers prescription drug payments.
Medicare Part A and B is considered Original Medicare, while Parts C and D were added later to cover additional medical costs not covered by Original Medicare.
Additionally, if there are still services Original Medicare does not cover, applicants can also try and add Medigap policies to their Medicare plan to help cover copayments and other out-of-pocket expenses.
Depending on your needs and eligibility, you will be able to apply for one or all of these options. Between the options available to you, be sure to choose the one that is right for you and will cover the services you need most.
